The Taylor University Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo will present “ Classic Jazz” on Tuesday, May 1, at 7:30 pm in the Rediger Chapel Auditorium. This will be the final concert directed by Dr. Al Harrison, who is retiring this year after 38 years of service at Taylor University as Professor of Music and Chair of the Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance. Selections to be presented by the large ensemble include Basie, Straight Ahead, Honeysuckle Rose, Harlem Nocturne, Four, Stolen Moments, and Bunch of Blues. The Jazz Combo will perform No Moe by Sonny Rollins and Stuff You Gotta Watch by Stanley Turrentine under the direction of Jeff Anderson, who has directed the Jazz Combo and assisted with the Jazz Ensemble during the past 30 years.
A few of the highlights for the Jazz Ensemble during Dr. Harrison’s time at Taylor University include performances at the Aquinas Jazz Festival and The Elmhurst College Jazz Festival, where many students won outstanding soloist awards; traveling and performing in both the Bahamas and Ecuador during extended tours; and the opportunity of performing with such talented guest artists as the Jamey Aebersold Quartet, Hal Melia Quartet, Terry Lower Trio, and Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra. Trumpeters including Ray Sasaki, Dominic Spera, Larry McWilliams, and Jeff Anderson have also performed with the band as well as Herb Bruce, trombone; Rich Matteson, euphonium; Don Lanphere, tenor saxophone; and Ecuadorian vocalist Karen Kennedy. In addition, the group has played jazz selections and sacred music for many churches, Taylor alumni gatherings, schools, libraries, banquets, and civic organizations. Many of Dr. Harrison’s former students are currently working as professional musicians in New York, Nashville, Chicago; teaching in schools and universities; and even performing as entertainers on cruise ships.
