October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This month especially, it is important to educate those in our community about domestic violence and the impact is has on the individual, their children, their families and their community.

Domestic violence is complicated, convoluted, multi-faceted and for those directly involved can be very isolating, frustrating and shameful. It is important to be educated on the impact domestic violence has on individuals and families, because there are many who suffer directly or indirectly.

Having a month dedicated to domestic violence awareness is vital because we all must be aware of the signs, so that we can prevent violence in our lives or the lives of those around us. Thousands of victims need to know that there is help out there in the form of education, encouragement and empowerment at Family Service Society and throughout Indiana.

Hands of Hope, a division of Family Service Society, Inc. exists to intervene and prevent domestic and sexual violence and stalking through education, advocacy, and comprehensive strategies.

Each victim Hands for Hope works with has a need to rebuild their self-esteem and self-worth. Hands of Hope offers that assistance and meets the victim where they are – by providing a 24-hour helpline, weekly support groups, safe temporary housing, case management, individual therapeutic counseling and outreach advocacy. It is critical that these services are able to be continued and, frankly, that cannot happen without community assistance.

It is of the utmost importance for our community to educate themselves on how to detect signs of domestic violence in the relationships they see around them, and even in their own relationships. If you or someone you know needs assistance, contact Hands of Hope, a division of Family Services Society, Inc. today.
