The Marion High School JROTC Raider team dominated the competition over the weekend as the first Indiana team ever to win the Fort Knox Regional Raider Challenge.

Saturday’s invitational was the first competition of the season for the Giants, who competed against the best teams from Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, and Indiana and earned first place overall.

“What a tremendous way for us to start the season,” said retired Lt. Col. David Farlow, the team’s coach.  “These results validate the hard work the cadets are putting in during practice. These Raider competitions are designed to test the physical strength and endurance of the cadets, and their ability to work as a member of a team. Saying the cadets become fatigued during the various events is an understatement. They are pushed to their physical limits and then asked to do even more.”

The MHS Raiders also earned a first place finish during the 2-mile run and a third place finish on the obstacle course. Consistently placing in the top four in all events pushed them into first place for the competition base on their overall point total.

“I was so proud of my team and how we worked together during each event,” said senior Audrey Dickerson, Raider team captain. “I have to admit I was really surprised when they announced that we were the overall winner. That was so exciting.”

Farlow is expecting big things for the team this season.

“This is a strong team with some experienced Raiders,” he said. “They were last year’s state champions and placed in the top 10 during the National Championship. So they know what it takes to win. I am looking forward to seeing how well they do the rest of our season.”

Next up for the Raiders is the competition hosted by Blackford High School on Oct. 6, where they will compete against several teams from Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana.
