A group of local servant-leaders wants to see the city of Marion go to the dogs — in all the best ways!

The Marion Rotary Club is picking up the effort to bring a dog park to the Ballard Field area at the east entrance into the city on Ind. 18. The service club estimates that about $100,000 will need to be raised to make the vision a reality.

Art Faulkner, member of the Rotary Club, said he doesn’t know if he’s ever seen the club adopt a project so whole-heartedly. The group is excited about the possibilities for the dog park and is dedicated to the effort it will take to bring this project to life, he said.

Their first major fundraising effort for the dog park will give local couples a chance to enjoy a romantic dinner and special entertainment. The event, “Night of Boleros: Romantic Songs & Candlelight Dinner”, is set for 6 p.m. Friday, May 4, at Meshingomesia Golf and Social Club. It will feature Paula Monsalve’s Quintet. Tickets are $30 apiece. To purchase, see any Marion Rotary Club member, or call 664-3720.

Monsalve was born and raised in Linares, Chile, then lived and worked in Spain in the 1980s, and since 1984 has lived in Indiana. She has served for decades as a true cultural ambassador to the Midwest, sharing her native music with audiences young and old throughout the region, including here in Grant County, where she has performed with the Marion Philharmonic Orchestra, and has played at venues including Indiana Wesleyan University and Taylor University.

The Marion Rotary Club is looking ahead to other fundraising efforts, including their annual golf ball drop in June, and will also be working to secure potential matching funds from the national Rotary organization, along with support from other local organizations and businesses.

Grant County features other dog parks, including Pawadise Park in Sweetser and Upland’s Pupland. But the vision for a dog park at the Ballard Field area in Marion has been something that has been dreamed of off and on for years. The Marion Rotary is hoping the excitement currently surrounding the idea will help them make it a reality, to help provide a new local option for area families and their furry friends.
