The Marion High School JROTC Raider Team lengthened the list of teams they have defeated to 28 this past Saturday as they earned victory at the Blackford High School Raider Challenge. Continuing their undefeated season, the Giants bested nine other teams from Kentucky and Indiana as they continue their march toward the JROTC Raider State Championship later this month.

“What a tremendous victory for our cadets,” said retired Lt. Col. David Farlow, the MHS JROTC senior Army instructor and Raider Team coach. “This was the first year for the Blackford competition, which was aptly labeled the ‘Blackford Beat Down’ because it was so physically challenging. It was the hardest Raider competition we have ever attended.”

In spite of the challenges, the Giants placed in the top three in all graded events and earned first place in four.

“I am so proud of my team,” said MHS junior I’Yela Hornaday, who was serving as the team commander for the first time. “They really pushed themselves and worked well together.”

The Giants were at a serious disadvantage on one event, the obstacle course. Marion High School does not have an obstacle course for the Raiders to train.

“Every time we face an obstacle course, which we do at most competitions, I just hope we have prepared as well as we can, considering our limitations,” said Farlow.  “Imagine the difficulty a football team would have if their place kicker did not have a goal post to practice on. That is kind of where we are as we compete with Raiders.”

That challenge doesn’t deter the cadets, though.

“I love the obstacle courses,” MHS junior Tyron Rice said. “They are the most challenging and most fun events at any competition.”

The Giants travel this Saturday for another regional Raider competition hosted by Concordia Lutheran High School in Fort Wayne. There they will face teams from Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.
