Marion Community Schools coaches offer sports camps for young athletes this month

MARION — Marion Giants athletics has several opportunities for students interested in exploring sports or continuing their training this month:
 
Marion Giants Basketball Academy
 
Marion Giants Basketball Academy starts Tuesday, June 4. The program, run by Marion boys basketball coaches, will be offering training for boys going into grade five through eight next school year. his opportunity will help athletes maximize their potential on and off the basketball court. The program is designed to challenge young athletes physically and mentally, and push them out of their comfort zone so they can grow and develop their abilities.
 
Training sessions will be held at Marion High School throughout June as follows:
  •          Tuesday, June 4, through Thursday, June 6
  •          Monday, June 10, through Thursday, June 13
  •          Monday, June 17, through Thursday, June 20
  •          Monday, June 24, through Thursday, June 27
>> Incoming 7th & 8th graders: noon to 1:30 p.m. each day.
 
>> Incoming 5th & 6th graders: 1:30 to 3 p.m. each day.
 
There is no cost for this camp.

Giants Cross Country Camp
 
Interested in running? Curious about cross country? The 2019 Giants Cross Country Camp will introduce students to distance running, training techniques, and competition. Incoming kindergartners through 8th-graders are invited.
 
The camp will run from 6 to 7:30 June 10 through 14 at Justice Intermediate School, 720 N. Miller Ave., Marion.
 
Cost is $10 per student, which includes a camp T-shirt.
 
Campers will have the chance to work out and learn from high school and collegiate runners. Throughout the week we will have special guests such as college coaches and collegiate runners come to talk about various aspects of distance running. There will be age-differentiated races at the end of the week.
 
All workouts are designed for each specific age group and ability levels.
 
What to bring: Wear clothes that are comfortable to run in and shoes appropriate for running; water bottle (very important!); watch (if you have one); and a positive attitude!
 
>> Registration form / waiver is available at www.mariongiantssports.com. Bring your completed form and waiver to the Marion High School main office along with your payment. The MHS main office will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday this week, so you can drop off your registration there during that time. You can also bring your registration and payment the first day of camp.

Grant County Community Tennis Association Summer Tennis Camp
 
MHS tennis coach Doug Porter and the GCCTA invite incoming first- through eighth-graders to the 17th annual Summer Tennis Camp, June 10 through 14 at Matter Park.
 
>> NOTE: Registration deadline is Wednesday, June 5.
  •          The session for first- through fourth-graders is 9 to 10 a.m. and is $30
  •          The session for fifth- through eighth-graders is 10:15-11:45 a.m. and is $50.
  •          Registration is half-off for each additional member in a family.
