Indiana Wesleyan University cosponsored a two-day symposium called “The State of the Evangelical Mind: Reflections upon the Past, Prospects for the Future” on Sept. 21-22 at the Levey Mansion in Indianapolis. The symposium gathered thought leaders from a wide variety of churches, parachurch organizations, seminaries, colleges and universities to consider the present challenges and opportunities facing their constituencies.

Joining IWU in sponsoring this event was the Sagamore Institute, Excelsia College (Australia), Christianity Today, InterVarsity Press and the Museum of the Bible. Sessions were hosted by Dr. David Wright, president of IWU, and Jay Hein, president of the Sagamore Institute, and challenged attendees to think anew about the array of possible contributions by both individuals and organizations.

Inspired in many ways by the closure of Books and Culture in December 2016, many evangelical scholars believed they needed to think through the significance of that event and what, if anything, should come as a response.

Keynote speakers included: Mark A. Noll (the University of Notre Dame), Jo Anne Lyon (The Wesleyan Church), David Mahan (the Rivendell Institute at Yale University), Abson Joseph (Indiana Wesleyan University), Donald Cassell (Sagamore Institute), Timothy Larsen (Wheaton College), Lauren Winner (Duke University Divinity School), and James K. A. Smith (Calvin College). Fifteen other scholars added presentations, and Mark Galli of Christianity Today closed the symposium.

“[The symposium] was memorable from the articulate opening remarks from Drs. Wright and Hein to the riveting closing challenge by Dr. Smith and Mr. Galli’s candid response,” said event emcee Jerry Pattengale, university professor at IWU and executive director of education for the Museum of the Bible. “I imagine we witnessed a prominent textbook in the making.”

In two groups, the proceedings from the symposium will be respectively published in the summer 2018 theme issue of Christian Scholar’s Review and in fall 2018 by InterVarsity Press.  Further details concerning the symposium, including the full schedule and bios for the keynotes and hosts, can be found atlumenresearchinstitute.org/conference/.
