The Marion High School JROTC hosted their fall biathlon on Saturday. Thirteen teams competed in the running and marksmanship event. The Marion teams earned multiple top finishes, including first place in the male category.

The two-person teams competed in their respective categories as male, coed, or female teams. The cadets ran 1,000 meters and then were required to take five shots with an air rifle at a target 10 meters away. For every missed shot, the cadets had to run a penalty lap of approximately 150 meters. The cadets completed this cycle three times. After the last shooting portion, the cadets ran one more 1,000-meter lap. The individual cadets’ times were combined with their team member into one team time. The fastest overall time won.

Marion’s male team of senior DJ Smith and junior Tyron Rice earned the top placement, with a combined time of 47:42, beating their closest competitors by nearly 5 minutes.

“This was my first biathlon so it was awesome to win,” Rice said. “I can’t wait to do a repeat when we host the spring biathlon.

The MHS female team of senior Audrey Dickerson and sophomore Kayleina O’Donnell earned second place in their category. Senior Hailey Teeguarden and sophomore Tayler Garriott claimed third place in the coed category.

“Biathlons are very challenging for the cadets,” said retired Lt. Col. David Farlow, MHS JROTC senior Army instructor. “They have to balance running speed versus being able to maintain steady breathing for accurate shooting.”

Looking back on her third biathlon, Teegaurden said: “Biathlons combine two of my favorite activities: running and shooting. And the competition itself is just challenging and fun. I love it.”
